How to Replace Motorcycle Brake Discs?

Generally, the brake pads of the original motorcycle can be used for at least 10,000 to 20,000 kilometers. Regular inspection of motorcycle brake pads can to a certain extent allow you to understand its wear and tear and service life in real time. You do not need to buy new brake pads for a certain period of time. The maintenance and maintenance of the brake pad device mainly includes three aspects, namely, draining the oil, checking the brake pads, and replacing the worn or torn brake pads.

Determine Whether It Needs to Be Replaced

1. Judge by the wear of the brake pads. The thickness of a new brake pad is generally around 1.5cm, and the thickness will gradually become thinner as the friction continues during use. Professional technicians suggest that when the thickness of the brake pads is only about 1/3 of the original thickness (about 0.5cm), the motorcycle owner should increase the frequency of self-checks and be ready to replace the brake pads at any time.

2. Judge by sound. The limit marks on both sides of the brake pad have directly rubbed the brake disc, which proves that the brake pad has exceeded the limit. When the brakes are lightly tapped, there is a slight sound, which means that the motorcycle brake pads must be replaced immediately. The brake disc should be checked in time after the noise is produced, because the motorcycle brake disc has often been damaged at this time, and the brake disc needs to be replaced when it is serious.

Steps to Replace Motorcycle Brake Discs

1. Collect the necessary tools and materials

Prepare new brake pads to replace the old ones. It is best to buy brake pads of the same brand and model. There are also some practical disassembly tools that can be obtained from rental locations such as garages. In addition, motorcycle rear brake caliper, motorcycle front brake caliper, brake pump repair kit, etc. must be prepared.

2. Fixed motorcycle

This step is best to choose a spacious, clean and bright environment. Put on protective clothing afterwards. The motorcycle can be supported on a center stand or triple clamp forks. Make sure it is firm to avoid accidents or injury during replacement. The free rotation of the front wheels of a motorcycle is mainly for testing the brake pads.

3. Check the components

Remove the motorcycle fork shelf. Carefully remove the tightened bolts and place them in a safe place. Locate the fixing pin of the fixing caliper and move it clockwise until the fixing clip is visible. The nose clamp pulls out the retaining clip.

4. Find the pad

After removing the gasket, check whether the brake pad is torn or damaged. Once the brake pads are abnormally worn or cone-shaped, the next step is to replace the motorcycle brake pads. After the brake pads are contaminated with oil or grease, excess grease, oil and debris will accumulate around. Cleaning the compartment with aerosol brake cleaner is an important step. Then carefully install and fix the brake pads in place.

5. Reinstall other components

Install the high specification replacement brake pads and put the calipers back into the front fork legs. Use a torque wrench to apply some force. Finally release the lever block.

During this maintenance process, pay attention to the fact that the brake fluid is easily deteriorated or eaten during the motorcycle paint job.
