How Much Do You Know about BMWK75S?

Some BMW models like K75S are the favorites of modification studios and enthusiasts. Especially in Europe, the number of old BMW bikes is quite amazing, and there are many amazing modified works. This article will share with you about the history of K75S, and you will find that it will be an interesting topic after you read.

In the early last century, the high-end motorcycle races were the era European cars ruled the world until the rise of Japanese industry after World War II. Japanese motorcycles represented by Honda began to suppress European cars, and multi-cylinder, high-revving engines dominated the top brands of motorcycle races. The success of the event was accompanied by the soaring sales of commercial bikes, and many small European manufacturers were even forced to close or change business models. A strong manufacturer like BMW began to fight back. Due to environmental protection requirements and other issues at the time, the "Boxer" engine encountered technical bottlenecks. So BMW was preparing to launch an inline four-cylinder motorcycle engine. But unexpectedly, this engine was placed horizontally. In 1982, the K100 equipped with a horizontally placed inline four-cylinder engine was launched. The motorcycle transmission system is still BMW's usual shaft transmission system.

The actual displacement of this engine is 987cc, DOHC 2V configuration, and cylinder diameter × stroke is 67×70mm, maximum horsepower is 90hp/8000rpm, maximum torque is 86Nm/6000rpm, and it has five-speed gearbox with maximum speed above 220km/h. Why should the straight four engines be placed horizontally? Normally, the straight four engines of a motorcycle are arranged side by side, and the pistons do up and down strokes, so that the center of gravity is higher, and the pistons have to work against gravity.

After the K100 came out in 1982, BMW launched a total of K100, K100 RS, K100 RT, K100 LT and other models, which are street bikes, sports bikes, station wagons, luxury cruisers and so on. In 1985, K100 ushered in its younger brother-K75. The K75 uses a horizontal parallel three-cylinder motorcycle engine with an actual displacement of 740cc, the cylinder diameter and stroke are 67×70mm, a maximum horsepower is 74hp/8000rpm, and a maximum torque is 68Nm/6750rpm. K75 is relative to a reduced version of K100. K75, K75C, K75S, K75RT were also introduced, including street motorcycles, sports motorcycles, and station wagons etc.

In 1996, BMW launched two special editions of K75RT Ultima and K75 Ultima, equipped with ABS and three-way catalytic converters. However, these two bikes have also become the K75's final versions, and the horizontal parallel three-cylinder engine has been discontinued, and a total of 68,011 units have been produced. In 1999, K100 has evolved to K1200LT/K1200RS. This is also the last locomotive with a horizontally parallel four-cylinder engine. The horizontally parallel four-cylinder engine has been retired, but the K series has not been discontinued. Instead, inline four-cylinder motorcycle models and horizontally-mounted six-cylinder motorcycle models are represented.

Well, this is the history of K75 series including K75S. And the application of horizontal parallel multi-cylinder engines on motorcycles has historical significance.
